John Halas is a marine biologist and inventor credited with the development of mooring systems that prevent damage to sensitive coral reefs around the world. His original observation of careless anchoring in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary led to experimental trials on securing vessels above reefs. This revolutionary idea set the standard for dive sites and popular anchoring locations throughout the world. Today in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary alone there are more than 400 mooring buoys. Countless square miles of coral reef habitat have been protected from his ingenuity.
